Two years ago, the Audi Club of Florida dusted off a competitive event that had not been run in over 40 years, our own iteration of the Mobil Economy Run. Last year it was a knock off of Audi’s A to B MPG rally in Europe, so the question was, what we would do for an encore. After much debate and discussion with one of the AoA regional managers, it was determined that we start at two Audi dealerships Ft Myers and Melbourne, meet up for lunch at an equidistance third location, Audi Coral Springs, then proceed on to Key West.
To add to the fun, something never before done by both the ACFL and probably AoA, a planned photo op of a caravan of Audis traversing the Seven Mile Bridge at Marathon. Although it would be a long day, we wanted to start early and get it all in and perhaps even have the opportunity to enjoy a sunset and green flash in Key West.
As CAFE standards become stricter, along with rising fuel prices driving improved fuel economy, we knew we had winner when instead of emphasizing speed and time we rewarded those who were both light on the accelerator and the brake plus efficient courteous drivers. So, we all know how fast we can drive, now let us see how efficiently we can do the same, and in the process be eligible for over $1900 in prizes. Owners would be competing against similar size, powered, and inducted engines in a multitude of models forming 12 classes with win, place, and show for those who achieved the best MPG as reported in their Audi Trip Computer over the entire rally, start to finish. Yes, the MPG figures provided by the trip computers can be a bit optimistic at times but no liar’s poker here. All would be subject to the same measurements even if they were to be a tad off.
Since this is also being planned as a family affair, we will be running a “Kinder Rally” for those children who accompany their parents in their quest for improved MPG. It will consist of 20 questions to see who is the most observant along the route and the winners to share some $450 in great prizes.
Of course, to participate, you must be driving an Audi with an operational trip computer. No Seats or Sodas are allowed.
