Frank Beddor Nationals-July 5-July 8, 2012 (Registration)

Serious fun
Jump in and join Audi Club North America members for some serious fun July 5-8 as members and their families celebrate the Frank Beddor Nationals in beautiful Colorado Springs hosted by the Rocky Mountain Chapter.

What’s unique about this experience? For one, it’s a gathering of like-minded Audi enthusiasts that will share a spirit of adventure as they gather for the 90th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb—Race to the Clouds. Secondly, from mild to wild, Colorado Springs offers over 50 major attractions and another adventure just around the next mountain pass!

25th Anniversary Win for Röhrl
July 2012 will mark the twenty-five year anniversary win of one of the greatest rally drivers of all time—Walter Röhrl. Cool as a cuke, Röhrl piloted an Audi sport quattro S1 up the world’s highest highway in record time of 10:47.85 minutes. To commemorate the victory, ACNA members will gather round the starting line to watch as racers embrace the mighty mountain in their quest to clinch the victory.

World Rally Champion, Walter Rohrl

Since 1916, man and machine have driven up Pikes Peak with white-knuckles on race day. As the world’s highest altitude race, Pikes Peak International Hillclimb is the second oldest motorsports event in the USA. The race is gripping with a climb of 4,720 feet, 156 turns, and covering a distance of 12.42 miles. Although every corner in the race deserves full respect, the turn beside “Bottomless Pit” gets top billing. Fortunately, no one has ever missed that corner, which would result in a 6,000 foot drop. Engines and adrenalin will be revved to the max as drivers prepare to conquer the tortuous road and possible rapidly changing weather from sleet, hail, fog or blinding snow before finishing.

Steve Beddor Pikes Peak remembrances
Steve Beddor, son of Audi Club NA founder, Frank Beddor recounts his thrilling 1994 participation at Pikes Peak: My first time at Pikes Peak was as a spectator in 1987 to watch rally legend Walter Röhrl race the mighty Sport quattro S1.

I had a unique perspective. I stood on the middle of the road (up in the “W” section) playing dodge with the oncoming race cars only to jump out of the way at the last moment. It struck me how quiet it was on the mountain (they release race cars every two minutes). The only noises were from the wind and an occasional bird calling. But then I heard a faint but unnatural chirping sound in the distance, miles down the mountain. I recognized it as the S1’s wastegate. That chirping just kept getting louder, closer, louder, closer…it seemed to take forever, but I was still startled when the S1 finally burst into view: Violent, Explosive, Rage!

Frozen in awe, I had to tell myself to dive out of the way. And then just as quickly, the S1 is out of sight, dust settled, a few faint chirps up the road and then it’s quiet and peaceful again.

Little did I know that seven years later, I would be cursing spectators on the road as I raced Pikes Peak. I regret that I wasn’t piloting a Sport, but the CTR I was driving for RUF Automobiles was still an awesome car. Pikes Peak is so unlike any other race that I returned again and again, twice finishing second in the Open class.

When Röhrl ran in 1987, it was a rough and tough road with deep loose gravel and plenty of large rocks in the mix. A few years later, they began to apply a dust-reducing oil to the dirt road, and in 1994 Mother Nature cooperated with just the right amount of moisture the night before turning the gravel into a smooth, solid surface. That allowed Rod Millen to set his 10:04 record.

After my 1994 experience, I returned the following year prepared, this time with a set up closer to road racing. I had not yet learned that at Pikes Peak, Mother Nature keeps it interesting.

In 1995, a road race set up was the worst choice, a rally set up was better, but what was needed was an ice race set up.

Rain, snow, ice and white-out conditions meant little or no practice before race day. On race day, the ice was so bad as to be deemed unsafe, so the finish line was moved down from the summit to Devil's Playground—the first time in the event's 70 plus year history the race was not to the summit. It was a challenge, but it was still great fun. Those were the best, most memorable years of the five I ran.
